Inspired by the Hank Green and Bernie Su’s The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, for their High School Senior Signature Project Alex and Kiyona created The H.V. Caulfield, a contemporary, gender-bent ‘adaptation’ of the first 1/3 of J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.

basically if you’re going to write neurodiverse characters it’s really important that you, the writer treat them with respect.

  • it’s okay to write in characters that discriminate against them, as long as you make it clear that the prejudiced characters are the ones at fault

When writing about a setting that you’re not familiar with, check units of measure. For example, if you live in the US and are writing about the rest of the world, remember that the rest of the world generally uses metric measurements or if you’re writing historically and only round-faced clocks existed, characters are more likely to refer to half past eight or three o’clock or quarter to twelve rather than 3:57pm.
